Joe Caccavella Joe Caccavella

nine(9) questions with shop barber / OWNER JOE CACCAVELLA JR…

Name / age / hometown:

Joe Caccavella Jr. / 46 / Park Ridge, IL

What got you into barbering:

My father got his barbers license in 1964 and opened up the shop here in 1968. His father was a barber his entire life, as well as my fathers older brother Rocco, and my fathers brother in law Lawrence.  So, I guess you could say it was in my blood to be a barber.

How often should a man realistically get a haircut:

I personally feel once a month is ideal to keep a man looking and feeling his best. If a guy gets a cut every month he always looks clean, and clean is professional.

What’s your favorite haircut to do and why:

I grew up in traditional barbershops so I like the simple, clean traditional gentleman’s haircuts. Think Don Draper or a young Elvis. Nice and clean in the sides, a dedicated part, clean around the ears with some product.

Beard or clean shaven — which looks better:

Depends on the guy I would think. If ya have a solid jaw line show it off. If you are chin-less then maybe a beard is your best bet..

What’s the craziest haircut request you’ve ever gotten:

Not just one in particular, but when guys come in who are clearly thinning and ask for a pompadour or slick back and then get butt hurt when it doesn’t look how they want. YOU DONT HAVE THE HAIR FOR IT DUDE !

Should guys wear product in their hair :

I feel a good haircut should look “good” with no product in it, and “better” with product. I always recommend Sixty8 Chicago unscented hair products which we sell in the barbershop.

What’s your advice for a guy trying to look more put together:

Get a haircut once a month. Wash your ass. Don’t wear shorts in public. Hold doors open for people. Think about others.  When ya look good ya feel good. Oldest saying in the barbershop world.

Why do you think people still value an old-school neighborhood barbershop in 2026:

Personally I think they don’t. People don’t care about small run family businesses anymore. They don’t care if their barbers licensed or not. All they care about is the end product and if that product will get them likes online. Covid definitely changed the world and not for the better, but shops like ours have no choice but to keep trying to move forward and hopefully become profitable again.  People need to support small businesses now more than ever before.

nine(9) questions with shop barber pedro gonzalez …

Name / age / hometown:

Pedro Gonzalez / 36 / Chicago, IL

What got you into barbering:

Cutting hair was always around me in one way or another. I have relatives with beauty salons, and I had an uncle who did hair. I liked the culture first — the shop environment, the conversations, the shit talking, the transformation. One haircut can completely change a dude’s confidence and demeanor.

How often should a man realistically get a haircut:

Depends on the haircut and how committed you are to not looking homeless. Most guys? Every 3–6 weeks. Some longer hairstyles are more based on comfort. If you’re cool with it looking a little overgrown, you can push some styles to around two months.

What’s your favorite haircut to do and why:

Honestly, it depends on the day. I still love doing a clean, crispy fade, even if the internet says it’s going out of style. The longer “flow” hairstyles are growing on me too — pun intended. Slowing down and doing more shear work can be a nice break from the monotony of clipper work.

Beard or clean shaven — which looks better:

Most men look better with some facial hair. A beard can add structure, maturity, and masculinity. It can also help hide a weaker jawline… or lack thereof. Ultimately, though, it comes down to personal preference.

What’s the craziest haircut request you’ve ever gotten:

Back in barber school, I had someone ask for the Kim Jong Un “Supreme Leader” haircut. To this day, it was probably the most fun I’ve had with a client request. It was for a Halloween costume, but still — definitely the weirdest request I’ve ever gotten.

Should guys wear product in their hair:

If you’re generally not someone who uses product, I’d still say use it for formal events or dates at the very least. It’s a small thing that can make you look a little more polished and groomed.

What’s your advice for a guy trying to look more put together:

Get consistent haircuts. Trim your nails. Wear clothes that actually fit. Smell decent. Drink water.

Why do you think people still value an old-school neighborhood barbershop in 2026:

Because people are starving for real human interaction. The barbershop is still one of the last places where people can sit down, unplug, joke around, vent, debate sports, talk about life, and leave feeling better than when they walked in. It’s also cheaper than therapy

Eight(8) questions with shop barber chanin cotter…

Name / age / hometown:

Chanin Cotter / 50’s / Onarga, IL

What got you into barbering:

Funny story: it was getting my haircut at Joe’s starting around 2011. Joe Jr. and I had a connection over all things with wheels; and our mutual dislike of the corporate work life. Those conversations turned into “why don’t you become a barber?” And so, I did!!

How often should a man realistically get a haircut:

I feel for most haircut styles, 4-5 weeks keeps the look consistent and orderly.

What’s your favorite haircut to do and why:

I enjoy giving haircuts that have some flow to the top and gradually work to tapering out at the neckline. It’s classic. And it satisfies about any lifestyle or career.

Beard or clean shaven — which looks better:

I think this really depends on the person. I also think that every man needs to grow a beard and maintaining it for a year. A beard can act as a great stying accessory.

What’s the craziest haircut request you’ve ever gotten:

As a Halloween gag…a guy had me trim away the bulk of the hair on the back of his head. Leaving effectively eyebrows, a mustache, sideburns, and soul patch beard. His wife was going to paint on eyes, a nose, and a mouth. Leaving a “two-face” look.

What’s your advice for a guy trying to look more put together:

Cleaning up the edges, so to speak. Even “messy” hair or a full beard. But making the look “intentional” speaks volumes. Giving a defined shape, using hair or a beard to frame your face and highlight your best features is what I enjoy doing for someone.

Why do you think people still value an old-school neighborhood barbershop in 2026:

I think the value of the local old school shop is the same feeling that I got the first time I walked into Joe’s 15 years ago. The feeling of “I’m in the right spot.” Knowing that the barbers are skilled in what they do. That they enjoy the artistry of sculpting hair and reinvigorating each person as step out. I enjoy being a part of the neighborhood fabric. I love when people stop in for a cut or just to chat, sharing stories of the impact Joe’s has had on their life in Logan Square.

Nine(9) questions with shop baber jake reboul…

Name / age / hometown:

Jake Reboul /36 / Hutchinson, KS

What got you into barbering:

While living in London, I found myself really enjoying my trips to the barbershop. So much so that I quit college and decided to learn the trade craft.

How often should a man realistically get a haircut:

Depends on the man and the style of cut. 4-6wks is average, less than 4wks for fades, every 8-12wks if you're growing it out.

What’s your favorite haircut to do and why:

I love a lived in textured medium length brush back. It's effortless and timeless, easy to dress up, looks good with minimal effort.

Beard or clean shaven — which looks better:

Might be biased cause I generally rock a beard. I think if you can grow facial hair and your job allows it, it's a nice accessory to any mans face. As long as you maintain it well.

What’s the craziest haircut request you’ve ever gotten:

Skullet, a reverse faded mullet, bald on top faded to curls on the neck.

Should guys wear product in their hair:

I think a lil something something always helps. But good hair doesn't come in a jar. Comes from the foundations we create during the haircut.

What’s your advice for a guy trying to look more put together:

Take time the time to blow dry your hair and use the correct products. Put intention and effort in to create the look you want.

Why do you think people still value an old-school neighborhood barbershop in 2026:

I think people are missing that sense of community. The barbershop have always been at the center of communities. Offering a place to come and escape the day to day.

Five questions with shop founder joe caccavella sr.

Five questions with shop founder Joe Caccavella Sr.

1. What’s your first memory of picking up clippers or scissors?

I was young back in Italy the first time I held clippers seriously, and I remember being nervous but excited. It wasn’t about money back then. It was about learning a skill with your hands that people actually depended on. I didn’t know it would become my life, but I knew I liked the work right away.

2. Why barbering instead of something else?

Back then, you either learned a trade or learned fast. Barbering was honest work. You showed up, you worked hard, and people respected it. I liked that a man walked in one way and walked out better because of something I did with my hands.

3. How did Joe’s Barbershop start?

I didn’t open the shop with some grand plan. I opened it because I believed in working for myself and building something solid. It started small, just a chair, a mirror, and a lot of long days. But I treated every customer the same way — with pride in my work.

4. What was the neighborhood like back then?

The neighborhood was different — quieter in some ways, rougher in others. Everyone knew each other. Shops were family-owned. When people came in, they stayed for conversation as much as the haircut. It was a community place, not just a business.

5. First customer you remember?

I don’t remember his name, but I remember wanting to do everything perfectly. I probably took twice as long as I needed to, just to make sure it was right. When he walked out happy, I knew I was in the right line of work.

MEET NEW SHOP BARBER JAKE REBOUL ..

Where are you from originally, and what brought you to Chicago?

Originally from Hutchinson Kansas. Coming back to the Midwest to be closer to family, and Chicago was an easy choice.

How long have you been cutting hair, and what got you into barbering?

I’ve been cutting hair for a little over 10yrs now. I got into it while living in London. I had never experienced a barbershop like the ones in the UK, mixing artistry with tradition. I became fascinated, so I decided to learn the craft.

What’s your specialty or favorite type of haircut/beard trim to do?

Tough question. I fell in love with the classics early on, the pompadors and long trim tapers and I’m always a fan of timeless classics. And I enjoy giving Hot Towel Shaves, learning to use the straight razor properly is a key part of what makes a barber A Barber.

What do you enjoy most about being behind the chair?

I enjoy making folks look good and feel great. Not many people get to enjoy work. Thankful everyday I get to put hair on the ground and have great conversations with folks for a living.

When you’re not at the barbershop, what do you like to do for fun?

I enjoy traveling and trying new food in new places with my wife. Riding my motorcycle. Enjoying live music, and being outside in nature whenever I can.

What’s one thing you’d like customers to know about you before they sit in your chair?

I’d want customers to know, I’m all about creating a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Whether it’s getting the usual, or wanting to try something new. Just another trim, or for a special occasion. I’m up to date on latest trends and techniques, and ready to tailor their hair to their needs.

Why are you excited to be part of the Joes?

Joes is Chicago history. A lot of barbers in the city came through these doors at one point or another, I’m excited to be a part of what makes Joes, Joes.

Come get a haircut from the man on his first day, Saturday 9/27.

Joe Caccavella Sr. Retires After 56 Years at Joe’s Barbershop Chicago

After 56 years of dedicated service, Joe Caccavella Sr., founder of Joe’s Barbershop in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood has officially retired. Since opening in 1968, Joe Sr. has become a neighborhood icon, shaping the lives of his clients and his community with the same precision he applied to every haircut.

Chicago, IL – After 56 years of dedicated service, Joe Caccavella Sr., founder of Joe’s Barbershop in Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood has officially retired. Since opening in 1968, Joe Sr. has become a neighborhood icon, shaping the lives of his clients and his community with the same precision he applied to every haircut.

Joe’s Barbershop has always been a family affair. In 2010 Joe’s son, Joe Caccavella Jr., a third-generation barber, took over the day-to-day operations, continuing the family legacy while bringing a modern edge to the shop. Under Joe Jr.’s leadership, the shop has maintained its reputation as one of Logan Square’s most trusted barbershops, staying true to the traditional techniques his father perfected over decades.

“Running this shop has been my life’s work, and seeing my son carry it on makes my retirement all the more meaningful,” says Joe Sr. “The barbershop is in great hands with Joe Jr., and I know he’ll keep the legacy going strong.”

As Joe Sr. steps away from the chair, the shop remains fully operational, offering the same high-quality services customers have trusted for over half a century.

Places we love: alarmist Brewing

Do you ever walk in somewhere and just know it will be good? A place where the beer flows, the bartenders and brewers are friendly, and the atmosphere puts you at ease. Alarmist Brewery on the northwest side hits all of those notes, and then some.

Do you ever walk in somewhere and just know it will be good? A place where the beer flows, the bartenders and brewers are friendly, and the atmosphere puts you at ease.

Alarmist Brewery on the northwest side hits all of those notes, and then some. I started stopping in a few years ago when I would ride around town, and after a while I became a regular. And for good reason: their beer is some of the best in the city. Don’t take my word for it. Their hazy Le Jus was the first ever hazy to win gold at the Great American Beer Festival back in 2018. And their pale ale Pantsless won bronze in 2020.

Alarmist is more than just beer. They whip up one of my favorite Old Fashioneds and do other cocktails, too. They also often set up a projector to watch the Bears and other sports, and in good weather their outdoor patio is one of the best around.

Fortunately for everyone, Alarmist and their award-winning beers are often available in the shop’s beer fridge. Book your next cut now — and enjoy some Alarmist on us.
